TfL’s Underground WiFi service awarded Friendly WiFi certification

London Underground

The development of high speed connectivity across the tube, leads to more and more passengers being connected online and potentially being exposed to harmful content. The major step forward by TfL in delivering upgraded WiFi services with supplier BAI in partnership with the major mobile operators, is supported by their decision to have their service Friendly WiFi certified.

The Friendly WiFi certification shows the commitment by TfL to ensure that a safe and comfortable browsing experience is provided, supported by the certification standard, demonstrating that inappropriate and indecent material is being blocked. The certified WiFi service provided, ensures that passengers are protected from being in an environment where they could have potentially been exposed to harmful material.

The move by TfL to become Friendly WiFi certified, supports their passion to make sure that all passengers can experience an enjoyable journey knowing that they will be comfortable and free from online harms whilst travelling.

Bev Smith, Director, Friendly WiFi supported the certification award, “The underground service across London is an essential service for commuters, visitors and children of all ages. We have been aware in the past of concerns raised about indecent material being viewed on public transport, therefore I welcome the decision by TfL to become Friendly WiFi certified and show that best practice is in place to support a positive and comfortable browsing experience for all passengers.”

About Friendly WiFi

Friendly WiFi – providing a certification standard for Public WiFi networks, to identify public places in areas such as Transport, Retail, Hospitality, Leisure and Education, who are providing safe filtered WiFi. Initiated by the UK Government with support from the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) and managed by the RDI trade organisation, the certification means that children, parents and guardians can look for the Friendly WiFi symbol to be sure that the public WiFi network is tested and verified on an annual basis to make sure pornographic and child abuse websites are blocked.
